Smoking Cessation Success and Timing in Türkiye
Öz
We use individual-level data from the 2022 wave of the Türkiye Health Survey, a nationally-representative study covering 11,170 individuals aged 15 and above. A two-stage empirical framework is adopted to analyse smoking cessation from complementary perspectives: a binary logit model for cessation success, and a duration model for the timing of cessation. Cessation success is associated with health status, tobacco-use history, and behavioural factors than with basic demographic characteristics. Higher education is associated with lower success once tobacco-use history and quitting-related factors are controlled for. Attempting cessation without external assistance substantially reduces the likelihood of success. Sex is not significantly related to cessation success, but duration models show that women quit earlier than men. Educational attainment exhibits a strong monotonic gradient in cessation timing. Health status is positively related to cessation success but associated with delayed cessation in the presence of a diagnosed chronic condition. Initiation motives display mixed effects, and age at initiation remains significant across both models. Tobacco cessation in Türkiye is a multidimensional process in which the determinants of achieving cessation differ from those shaping when cessation occurs. Recognising these dimensions can inform more targeted and effective tobacco control policies in Türkiye and in similar middle-income settings.
