Mustafa Kemal Atatürk saw that the Turkish people read the Quran without knowing the meaning of the Quran and wanted his people to be aware of the content of the holy book they believed in. In 1925, he made attempts to translate and interpret the Qur'an into Turkish. After the translation and tafsir work was completed, ten thousand copies of the Quran were printed in Turkish and Atatürk covered all the expenses. Atatürk said that reading the Qur'an without understanding it will earn people rewards, but it will not replace worship. He stated that in order to worship, the meaning of the holy book should be read and understood. In the last period of the Ottoman Empire, some Turkish intellectuals also thought about making the language of religion Turkish, but they could not put it into practice.
Atatürk wanted studies to be carried out on the reading of the sermon and call to prayer in Turkish and closely followed the work of the clergy he appointed. He stated that the Arabic sermons read to the public in mosques were not understood by the public. He wanted the sermons to be in his own language, namely Turkish, so that the people could understand what was said. He also wanted the call to prayer, which is a call to prayer, to be read in Turkish. Atatürk specifically stated that his purpose was to translate the religious language into Turkish, and that the studies carried out were not a religious issue but a language issue. In this study, it is discussed why Atatürk transformed the religious language into Turkish by making use of archive documents.
