Öz

David Jay Bordwell ve Kristin Thompson’ın geliştirdiği metodolojik bir yaklaşım olan “neoformalizm” (yeni biçimcilik), filmlerin anlatı-biçim ilişkisine odaklanır. “Biçim” (form), filmin parçaları arasındaki ilişkiler sistemi iken, “anlatı” (narrative) zaman-mekân ikilisinden gelişen neden-sonuç ilişkisi bağlamında, olay örgüsünün öykü bilgisini dağıtma şeklidir. Neoformalist yaklaşım, filmlerin “stil”ini, anlatı-biçim ilişkisini çözümleyerek, anlatı perspektifinden tamamlanmış bir sanat eserinin var olma sürecini ve prensiplerini inceler.
Çalışmada, Bordwell ve Thompson’ın geliştirdikleri neoformalist yaklaşımın önerdiği metodolojinin nasıl temellendirildiği ve değerlendirildiği sorularına yanıt aranmış, filmlerin anlatı-biçim ilişkisini çözümlemek için önerdikleri ilkelerin neler olduğu ortaya konulmuştur.
Neoformalist film analizi, filmlerde biçimsel öğelerin sistematik olarak nasıl kurulduğunu, filmlerde hâkim olan biçimsel yönelimlerin neler olduğunu, biçimin anlatıyı nasıl yönlendirdiğini, filmlerin hangi ilkelere göre inşa edildiğini ve bu ilkelerin hangi koşullarda, nasıl ve neden ortaya çıktığını ortaya koymayı amaçlar.
Sonuç olarak, neoformalist film analizi açıklayıcı önermeler oluşturmak için filmin oluşturulma sürecini ve prensiplerini inceler. Neoformalist yaklaşımın metodolojisi, sinemayı “somut gerçeklere bağlı tutma çabası” ile temellendirilmektedir. Bu çalışmada, neoformalist yaklaşımın önerdiği film biçimini oluşturan öğeler betimlenerek, yaklaşımın sinema araştırmalarına getirdiği metodolojik sistem açıklanmaya çalışılmıştır.

The Neoformalist Approach to Films

Öz

Neoformalism focuses on the form and narration relationship in movies. While “form” is the overall system of relations between the elements in whole film, the “narrative” is the way the storytelling is distributed within the plot in cause-effect relationship that develops in time and space. The neoformalist approach examines the process and principles of creating a narratively complete work of art by analyzing the style and the narrative-form relationship of films.
The study seeks to answer the questions of how the methodology proposed by the neoformalist approach developed by Bordwell and Thompson was grounded and evaluated, alongside with the principles they proposed to analyze the narrative-form relationship of the films.
As a result, the neoformalist film analysis aims to reveal how the formal elements are systematically created in the films, how the form directs the narrative, and accordingly, under which principles the films are built. The methodology of the neoformalist approach is based on the effort to keep cinema connected to existing facts. In the light of this, the study presents a descriptive study of the elements that make up the film format suggested by the neoformalist approach. With the aim of contributing to literature, the present study seeks to explain the methodological innovation brought by this approach to cinema research.
