THE EFFECT OF ERGONOMICS EDUCATION ON MUSCULOSKELETAL PAIN AND QUALITY OF LIFE IN UNIVERSITY STUDENTS: A QUASI-EXPERIMENTAL STUDY

Öz

The aim of this study is to evaluate the effects of structured ergonomics education on musculoskeletal pain, physical activity level, and health related quality of life in university students using a quasi-experimental design. A prospective quasi-experimental study with pretest-posttest control groups was conducted with 116 university students (intervention: n=58; control: n=58). The intervention group received a 9-week structured ergonomics training program. The Cornell Musculoskeletal Disorder Questionnaire, Visual Analog Scale, International Physical Activity Questionnaire-Short Form, and Nottingham Health Profile were used for the assessments. Statistical analyses included within-group and between-group comparisons, with a significance level of p<0.05. A significant increase in physical activity level was observed in the intervention group (p=0.001), and it was found to be higher than the control group in the final test (p=0.001). A significant improvement was determined in the pain subscale of the Nottingham Health Profile in the intervention group (p=0.001), but no difference was found between the groups. A significant improvement in favor of the intervention group was observed in the sleep subscale (p=0.037). Regional assessment revealed a significant decrease in neck, shoulder, and knee pain (p<0.05). Structured ergonomics training appears to be effective in increasing physical activity levels and reducing some musculoskeletal pain in university students.
