With the rapid changes in technology with globalization, companies have been directed to invest in innovation products and services. Companies that want to develop new products or adapt the existing product to technological development invest in research and development (R&D) activities. Investment expenditures for R&D activities are considered as both a risk and a return for companies. The purpose of this study is to determine the impact of companies’ R&D expenditures on their financial performance. In this context, R&D and performance data of 7 companies traded in Borsa Istanbul (BIST) Informatics Index between 2012-2012 were used. Panel data analysis was applied with 3 different models established to determine the effect of R&D intensity and R&D activities on the rate of return on assets, return on equity and earnings on stock. In addiition, leverage ratio and natural logarithm of asset size are used as control variables in the analysis. As a result empirical tests, it is concluded that the effect of R&D intensity ratio on financial performance indicators is statistically significant and positive. No statistically significant relationship was found between R&D activities and performance indicators.
