Determination of Generator Profits in Day-Ahead Electricity Market Under the Effect of Capacity Withholding by Agent-Based Modelling

In this study, it is aimed to understand whether the generator production companies in the generation part of an existing test system regulated in accordance with the day-ahead market conditions will dominate the market under variable demands. For this, the daily profits of the generators were examined. Capacity withholding studies were used to determine market dominance. Combined capacity withholding has been applied to the existing electricity system, where economic and physical capacity withholding are used together. It has been examined how the generator and withholding type chosen make a difference in profits and which selections increase them. To prove the validity of the method, the base version of the test system was also taken into account. The regional marginal prices (LMP) of each transmission bus bar are analyzed in a wholesale simulation environment named AMES (Agent-Based Modeling of Electricity Systems) based on reinforcement learning. While determining regional bus bar prices, the effect of generator daily net earnings and line restrictions are also considered. It is assumed that generator outages and weather conditions do not affect the test system. To better understand the effect of capacity withholding types, generators were exposed to a single learning process. As a result, the type of withholding that increases profit the most is economic capacity withholding. Combined capacity withholding also had a remarkable effect. The effect of physical capacity withholding is not significant enough to be considered. It has been observed that generators with large production capacity increased their profits significantly and dominated the market.
