The Pedagogy of Silence: Spiritual Purification and Moral Education in Islamic Sufism and Japanese Zen Buddhism

Bu makalede, İslam Sufizmi ile Japon Budizmi’nin (özellikle Zen ekolü) manevî arınma ve ahlak eğitimi anlayışları karşılaştırmalı bir perspektiften incelenmiştir. Çalışmada öncelikle şu soruya yanıt aranmıştır: Farklı kültürel ve metafizik zeminlerden beslenen bu iki gelenek, eğitimin yöntem ve amaçları bakımından nasıl benzerlikler ve farklılıklar ortaya koymaktadır? Bu sorudan hareketle araştırmanın amacı, sessizlik, teemmül, deneyim temelli öğrenme, disiplin ve süreklilik, öğretmen–öğrenci ilişkisi ve holistik eğitim gibi temel temalar üzerinden pedagojik ilkeleri görünür kılmak ve modern eğitim tartışmalarına katkı sağlayabilecek evrensel sonuçlar ortaya koymaktır. Çalışmanın gerekçesi, manevî geleneklerin çoğunlukla teolojik ya da mistik düzeyde ele alınmasına karşın, pedagojik işlevlerinin sistematik biçimde karşılaştırılmamış olmasıdır. Bu nedenle araştırma, Sufizm ve Zen’in eğitim anlayışlarını karşılaştırarak, çağdaş değer eğitimi ve karakter pedagojisi için kuramsal bir zemin geliştirmeyi hedeflemiştir. Yöntem olarak hermenötik ve karşılaştırmalı analiz benimsenmiştir. Her iki geleneğe ait birincil kaynaklar ile akademik literatür incelenmiş, kavramlar kendi bağlamlarında değerlendirilerek eğitim bilimleri açısından yorumlanmıştır. Bu süreçte özellikle sessizlik ve teemmülün zihinsel dinginlik sağlama; deneyim temelli uygulamaların erdemlerin içselleştirilmesine aracılık etme; disiplin ve sürekliliğin ahlakî kazanımları kalıcılaştırma; öğretmen–öğrenci ilişkisinin modelleme yoluyla karakter inşasını destekleme; holistik eğitimin ise zihinsel, duygusal ve ruhsal boyutları bütünleştirme işlevleri öne çıkmıştır. Elde edilen bulgular, yöntemlerde benzerlik bulunmasına karşın nihai amaçlarda farklılık olduğunu göstermiştir. Sufizm’de arınma, Allah’a yakınlık ve ilahî hakikatin idrakiyle; Zen’de ise zihinsel berraklık ve śūnyatā idrakiyle anlam kazanmıştır. Sonuç olarak çalışma, iki geleneğin eğitimsel deneyimlerinden hareketle çağdaş pedagojide uygulanabilecek evrensel ilkeler önermekte; sessizlik, deneyim, disiplin ve rehberliğin modern değerler eğitimiyle bütünleşebileceğini ortaya koymaktadır.

This article examines the conceptions of spiritual purification and moral education in Islamic Sufism and Japanese Buddhism (particularly the Zen school) from a comparative perspective. The central research question addressed is: How do these two traditions, rooted in distinct cultural and metaphysical foundations, converge and diverge in terms of their pedagogical methods and aims? Accordingly, the study aims to illuminate the pedagogical principles of silence, contemplation, experiential learning, discipline and continuity, the teacher–student relationship, and holistic education, while drawing universal conclusions that may contribute to contemporary debates in educational theory. The rationale of the study lies in the fact that, although spiritual traditions are often approached from theological or mystical perspectives, their pedagogical functions have not been systematically compared. Thus, this research seeks to develop a theoretical framework for contemporary moral and character education by juxtaposing the educational philosophies of Sufism and Zen. Hermeneutical and comparative analysis were employed as the methodological approaches. Primary sources from both traditions as well as the academic literature were examined, and key concepts were interpreted within their respective contexts through the lens of educational sciences. The analysis highlights the pedagogical significance of silence and contemplation in cultivating mental tranquility; experiential practices in fostering the internalization of virtues; discipline and continuity in ensuring the permanence of moral attainments; the teacher–student relationship in modeling character formation; and holistic education in integrating the intellectual, emotional, and spiritual dimensions of human development. The findings indicate that while methodological similarities exist, the ultimate goals differ: purification in Sufism is grounded in nearness to God and the realization of divine truth, whereas in Zen it is oriented toward mental clarity and the realization of śūnyatā. In conclusion, the study proposes universal principles applicable to contemporary pedagogy by drawing on the educational experiences of these two traditions, demonstrating how silence, experience, discipline, and guidance can be integrated into modern approaches to moral and values education.
