This study aimed to determine the prevalence of rotavirus and adenovirus in children with viral gastroenteritis over a two-year period and to determine the distribution of these agents according to age, gender, season and year in a secondary state hospital in Mersin province.Stool samples of 1264 pediatric patients aged between one month and 18 years who were admitted to a secondary state hospital in Mersin province between January 1, 2022 and December 31, 2023 were retrospectively evaluated for rotavirus and adenovirus antigens. The rotavirus and adenovirus combo test kit (JusChek, Malaysia) was used that an immunochromatographic test designed for the qualitative detection of rotavirus and adenovirus antigens.Of 1264 patients, 167 (13.2%) were positive for rotavirus and 76 (6.0%) were positive for adenovirus. Of the positive cases, 156 (%12.3) were male and 87 (%6.9) were female and there was no significant difference between rotavirus and adenovirus positivity and gender. Both rotavirus and adenovirus antigen positivity were statistically significant in the 0-2 age and 0-5 age group compared to other age groups. When the distribution of rotavirus antigen positivity according to seasons was analyzed, a statistically significant difference was found in autumn and winter months, while no significant difference was found in the distribution of adenovirus antigen positivity according to seasons.Adenovirus and rotavirus should not be ignored in the etiology of gastroenteritis, especially in children. Therefore, rotavirus vaccination should be considered as an important prevention strategy to reduce the incidence of rotavirus-associated diarrhea, prevent hospitalizations, mortality and morbidity, and alleviate the economic burden of the disease.
