Spatial Representation of Turkish Oya Lacework and the Influence of Folkloric Narratives on Brand Image

The adaptive reuse of historic buildings is a multilayered process that extends beyond physical conservation to include the contemporary reinterpretation of cultural and folkloric values. This study examines the transformation of the Sivrioğulları Mansion, a traditional Turkish house, into the İmren Erşen Oya Museum, focusing on the spatial representation of oya and visual identity design. A qualitative research approach was adopted, using a document-based case study, architectural observation, visual analysis, content analysis, and descriptive analysis. The museum’s physical transformation, the folkloric meanings of oya, and the ways in which these narratives are translated into visual identity were evaluated. Oya was examined in relation to women’s labor, nonverbal communication, emotional expression, and intergenerational cultural transmission. The study emphasizes that motif meanings are not fixed but vary according to regional and social contexts. Accordingly, oya is considered not merely as a displayed handicraft, but as a form of living cultural heritage sustained through production knowledge, social memory, and transmission practices. The museum is likewise interpreted as a representational space that makes folkloric narratives visible and reconnects them with contemporary society. The findings suggest that architectural memory and folkloric memory can be integrated within a unified visual identity system. The İmren Erşen Oya Museum provides a significant example of the public visibility of women-centered traditional production and the contemporary representation of intangible cultural heritage. The study offers an interdisciplinary contribution linking architectural heritage, folkloric memory, and visual communication. Its conclusions are limited to the symbolic, formal, and cultural representational capacity of the visual identity, as visitor perception was not empirically measured. Digital platforms are therefore regarded as complementary tools supporting visibility, accessibility, and documentation.
