The Futility of Higher Education in Elif Batuman’s The Idiot
Öz
Elif Batuman’s first novel, The Idiot (2017) tells the events in the freshman year of its protagonist, Selin. Selin’s story reveals the condition of university education and how it is observed from a student’s point of view. In this respect, The Idiot can best be classified as a campus novel. The campus novel has developed as a postwar subgenre of the contemporary novel since the 1950s. Most of these works were written by professors and their protagonists were, again, professors. In The Idiot, on the other hand, Selin mirrors a reverse view of academia. This study focuses on The Idiot as a contemporary campus novel and points out its different and subversive aspects, separating it from conventional examples of the genre. In this regard, this study argues, The Idiot is much more than a sentimental love story and the novel criticizes the higher education in terms of its inefficiency and futility in modern life. It is a story of disappointment of a student who had higher expectations from the higher education than the higher education could offer. Selin has some solid remarks about the gaps between the intended outcomes of the courses she takes and what she actually learns from them. According to Selin, the conventional higher education system should be reformed and improved so that she can witness its positive effects in life. The novel’s focus on the entry of digital communication and language into the campus and social life, together with the students’ point of view in the narrative make it a distinctive example of its genre.
