Herbert Spencer’ın Agnostisizmi: Epistemolojik Sınır ve “Bilinemez”

Öz

Agnostisizm, genellikle metafizik iddialar karşısında yargının askıya alınması olarak anlaşılmaktadır. Ancak Herbert Spencer’ın “Bilinemez” kavramı, epistemolojik sınır ile ontolojik referans arasındaki ilişkinin nasıl anlaşılması gerektiği sorununu gündeme getirmektedir. Bu makale, Spencer’ın “Bilinemez” kavramını epistemolojik bir sınırlama ile ontolojik bir yönelim arasındaki basit bir tutarsızlık olarak gören yorumları yeniden değerlendirmeyi amaçlamaktadır. Bu doğrultuda Spencer’ın bilginin göreliliği, “artık bilinç” ve epistemolojik sınır anlayışını kendi kavramsal çerçevesi içinde çözümleyerek, “Bilinemez”in epistemolojik yapıya dışarıdan eklenmiş metafizik bir unsur değil, bilginin ilişkisel yapısından türeyen yapısal bir sonuç olduğu ileri sürülmüştür. Sonuç olarak bu çalışma, Spencer’ın agnostisizminin yalnızca epistemik bir çekimserlik öğretisi değil, epistemolojik sınır ile ontolojik referans arasındaki ilişkinin nasıl kurulduğunu açıklamaya çalışan bir sınır teorisi olarak anlaşılması gerektiğini önermektedir.

Herbert Spencer’s Agnosticism: Epistemological Limits and “The Unknowable”

Öz

Agnosticism is generally understood as the suspension of judgment in the face of metaphysical claims. However, Herbert Spencer’s concept of the “Unknowable” raises the problem of how the relationship between epistemological limitation and ontological reference should be understood. This article aims to reassess interpretations that regard Spencer’s “Unknowable” as a simple inconsistency between epistemological limitation and ontological orientation. In this context, by analyzing Spencer’s concepts of the relativity of knowledge, “residuary consciousness,” and epistemological limitation within his own conceptual framework, the study argues that the “Unknowable” is not a metaphysical element externally added to epistemology, but a structural result derived from the relational structure of knowledge itself. Consequently, the article suggests that Spencer’s agnosticism should be understood not merely as a doctrine of epistemic restraint, but as a theory of limitation that seeks to explain how the relationship between epistemological boundaries and ontological reference is constituted.
