The drivers of e-banking use and the role of the Internet of Things in Türkiye: Considering internet use to address sample selection bias

Öz

Financial technologies representing the innovative aspects of financial services advance human life by simplifying banking transactions. Considering their advantages, this study aims to examine the contributing factors to e-Banking use in Türkiye based on the Neoclassical utility. For this purpose, a survey dataset covering 29,581 individuals from the Turkish Statistical Institute implemented in 2022 is employed. The literature lacks studies considering the Internet of Things devices, most of which also ignore sample selection bias. Using a probit model with sample selection, this study also discovers the factors affecting internet use. The empirical findings indicate that the young, those in smaller households, the educated, the employed, those in higher income households, and those in households with laptops, tablets, internet connection, and other technologies are more likely to use the internet. Also, men, those under the age of 36 years, those in smaller households, the educated, the employed, those in high-income households, those in households with tablets and internet connection, and those in households with Internet of Things devices are more likely to use e-Banking. Based on these findings, the study draws policy implications to increase internet and e-Banking use in Türkiye.
