Antik Çağ’da Erythrai Kentinin Ekonomik Potansiyeli ve Ege Ticaretindeki Rolü

Öz

Araştırmanın temel amacı, Mimas Yarımadası’nda (Karaburun) yer alan Erythrai kentinin Antik Çağ’da Ege ticaretindeki yerini ve önemini ortaya koymaktır. Bu bağlamda kentin komşularıyla olan siyasi, ekonomik ve ticari ilişkileri ayrıntılı olarak incelenmiştir. Araştırmanın orijinalliği açısından antik kaynaklar, sikkeler, yazıtlar ve arkeolojik malzemelerin kullanılmasına öncelik verilmiştir. Erythrai ile Khios Adası arasındaki Khios Boğazı, Antik Çağ’da Akdeniz-Ege-Marmara ve Karadeniz arasındaki ticaret yolu üzerindeki ana geçiş noktalarından biriydi. Boğazın hem Khios hem de Erythrai tarafında irili ufaklı birçok liman ve demir atma yeri bulunuyordu. Özellikle fırtınalı havalarda bu limanlar gemiler için hayati öneme sahipti. Erythrai bu ticaret yolu üzerinde sadece transit bir durak noktası değil aynı zamanda zengin hinterlandında üretilen ürünlerin pazarlandığı ticaret üssü niteliğindeki bir merkezdi. Arkeolojik buluntular kentte üretilen kaliteli şarap ve zeytinyağının amphoralarla Karadeniz’in kuzeyindeki Yunan polislerine kadar geniş bir coğrafyaya ihraç edildiğini göstermektedir. Kentin kuzeyindeki atölyelerde üretilen amphoralar, değirmentaşları, kefal ve barbun gibi balıklar diğer önemli ihraç ürünleriydi. Erythrai’ın hem her türlü ürünün yetiştirildiği geniş hinterlandı hem de konumu sayesinde özellikle Klasik ve Hellenistik dönemlerde Ionia ticaretinin başat aktörlerinden biri olduğu anlaşılmaktadır. Roma Döneminde ana kara yolu güzergâhının dışında kalan kent, sık sık meydana gelen depremlerin de etkisiyle zamanla önemini yitirmiştir.

The Economic Potential of Erythrae in Antiquity and Its Role in Aegean Trade

Öz

This study aims to explore the role and significance of Erythrae, situated on the Mimas Peninsula, in Aegean trade during Antiquity. The city's political, economic, and commercial relations are examined in detail, with emphasis on ancient sources, coins, inscriptions, and archaeological materials. Findings from the literature have been supported by field research and analyzed through comparative methods. Erythrae’s position within the trade network linking the Mediterranean, Aegean, Marmara, and Black Sea regions is particularly noteworthy. Located along the crucial Chios Strait, the city quickly rose to prominence in Ionia due to its strategic control of this maritime passage. Beyond serving as a transit point, Erythrae functioned as a commercial hub, exporting goods from its fertile hinterland. Archaeological evidence shows that wine and olive oil produced locally were transported as far as the northern Black Sea poleis. Amphorae, millstones, and fish such as mullet and red mullet were also main export items. During the Classical and Hellenistic periods, Erythrae became a major player in regional trade. However, in the Roman period, it gradually declined due to its exclusion from key overland routes and the impact of earthquakes. This study contributes a new perspective on Erythrae’s economic capacity, trade network, and harbor localization.
