THE AMBIVALENT RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN FEMINISMS AND FREEDOM
Abstract
Contemporary feminist theories are based on the experience of freedom of subjects who have their own mind, perception and agency, who go to the various roots of their sources with their existential possibilities and deal with them constructively, healingly and creatively. In this study, we will analyse these processes and feminist theories' understanding of freedom, their critiques and struggles, by deconstructing Nancy Hirschmann's interpretation of the concept of freedom, which she adapted to feminism based on Ishiac Berlin's definition of positive and negative freedom in his article Two Concepts of Liberty, through different experiences. After discussing the basic propositions of critical feminisms about subjectivity and the models they offer in general terms, we will discuss feminisms' bitter relationship with freedom in the context of being an agent of action, "not surrendering one's mind to authority", and "becoming a woman" within the framework of Sara Ahmed's term "killjoy subject". In this process, the following three judgements will form the main axis of the study: 1) Feminism is not a monolithic model produced by modern secular language. 2) Instead of a single definition and model of freedom, feminist theories have created models that include different non-centred cultural and historical practices based on the relationship between recognition and rights. 3) New concepts that will describe and explain these new models cannot be created on the basis of the existing normative discourse; a feminine method is needed to create concepts. On the basis of these three judgements, we will critically analyse the experience of gendered freedom and discuss the problems and alternative responses it raises.
