FOUR FACTS FOR LEADERS

Abstract

I wish to identify four interrelated propositions about leaders which have significance for thinking about leadership and leadership in Africa. The first two draw on the extremes represented by villains and heroes with the first asserting that an unjust leader is no leader at all and the second, that a leader is a role model. Insofar as communication is essential to successful role modeling, a leader is good at dialogue. And fourth, I will show why leaders are not professionals and how this insight gives the public a legitimate claim on what their leaders should know. As I elucidate and establish these four claims, I do so as from the perspective of a professional ethicist and wish to inform leadership ethics with insights from this field much as Joanne Ciulla has introduced ethics to leadership as its heart. (Ciulla, 2004). In considering the field of leadership studies, she has noted the paucity of ethical theories, stressed the need for them, and looked favorably upon some of them like “transforming leadership” and “servant leadership.” She expresses frustration over the time scholars have devoted to defining leadership and to conducting empirical research to help us understand the nature of leaders. If she issues a call for the introduction of ethics to leadership studies, I would distinguish my contribution as a call to import some of the wisdom from the ever-growing field of professional ethics to leadership studies.

LİDERLER İÇİN DÖRT GERÇEK

Öz

Liderler hakkında, liderlik ve Afrika‟da liderlik ile ilgili düşünce için önem taşıyan birbiriyle ilişkili dört önerme tanımlamak istiyorum. İlk ikisi, kötüler ve kahramanlar tarafından temsil edilen uç noktalara yaklaşır. İlki adil olmayan bir liderin hiçbir şekilde bir lider olmadığını, ikincisi ise bir liderin örnek bir insan olduğunu iddia eder. Başarılı örnek insan olmak için iletişim önemli olduğu sürece, [üçüncü önerme olarak] bir lider diyalogda iyi olacaktır. Dördüncü olarak, liderlerin neden meslek erbabı kişiler olmadıklarını ve bu görüşün kamuya, onların liderlerinin bilmeleri gerektiği şey hakkında meşru bir hak talebi nasıl verdiğini göstereceğim. Bu dört iddiayı açıklığa kavuşturup saptarken, Joanne Ciulla‟nın etiği liderliğin yüreği olarak tanıttığı (Ciulla 2004) gibi ben de bir meslek etikçinin perspektifinden bakıyorum ve liderlik etiğini bu alandaki fikirlerden yararlanarak tanıtmak istiyorum. Ciulla liderlik hakkındaki çalışmalar alanını göz önüne aldığında, etik teorilerin bu alanda az olduğunu yazdı, bu alanda etik teorilere ihtiyaç olduğunu vurguladı ve etik teorilere dayanan liderlik çalışmalarının bir kısmını, özellikle “dönüştürücü liderlik” ve “hizmetçi liderlik”i benimseyerek olumlu karşıladı. Ciulla, şimdiye kadar bilginlerin liderliği tanımlama ve liderlerin doğasını anlamamıza yardımcı olacak deneysel araştırmayı yürütme konusundaki çalışmaları hakkında duyduğu hayal kırıklığını bildirir. Eğer, Ciulla liderlik hakkındaki çalışmaların etikle tanıştırılması için bir çağrıda bulunuyorsa, ben kendi katkımı, her geçen gün büyüyen meslek etiği alanından liderlik çalışmalarına birtakım yol gösterici bilgiler ithal etmeye bir çağrı olarak ayırt ediyorum.
