Adam Smith’s Considerations Concerning The Formation and Development of Languages and Its Connection to his Moral and Economic Thought

Abstract

The purpose of this article is to shed light on Adam Smith’s –widely recognized as the founder of classical economics- one of the lesser known works, the views in his essay on language. This is also a good example which shows that Smith was a versatile thinker not having restricted himself to only economics and ethics. Therefore, in the first part, biographical details suggesting that Smith dealt with the fields of literature and language throughout his life, are mentioned. In the second part it is emphasized that language problems coming into prominence in the intellectual world in 18th century and Smith’s brief essay on the formation and development of language are in fact an effort to reflect the spirit of the age. The third chapter is devoted to a detailed summary of the ideas contained in his “Considerations Concerning The First Formation of Languages, And The Different Genius of Original And Compounded Languages”. In the last part, some points which can relate Smith’s considerations on language to his views on the fields of economics and ethics, are briefly highlighted

ADAM SMITH’İN DİLLERİN OLUŞUMU VE GELİŞİMİ ÜZERİNE DÜŞÜNCELERİNİN AHLAK VE İKTİSAT ÜZERİNE GÖRÜŞLERİYLE BAĞLANTISI

Öz

Bu makalenin amacı, yaygın olarak klasik iktisadın kurucusu olarak tanınan Adam Smith’in daha az bilinen çalışmalarından birine, dil üzerine yazdığı denemesindeki görüşlerine ışık tutmaktır. Bu aynı zamanda, Smith’in sadece iktisat ve ahlak alanında kendini sınırlamamış çok yönlü bir düşünür olduğunu da gösteren iyi bir örnektir. Bunun için ilk bölümde, Smith’in dil, edebiyat ve retorik alanlarıyla yaşam boyu ilgilenmiş olduğunu gösteren biyografik ayrıntılara değinilmiştir. İkinci bölümde, 18.yy düşünce dünyasında dil sorunlarının ön plana çıkması ve Smith’in dilin oluşumu ve gelişimi hakkındaki kısa denemesinin de aslında çağın bu ruhunu yansıtan bir çaba olduğu vurgulanmıştır. Üçüncü bölüm, Smith’in “Dillerin İlk Oluşumları ile Orijinal ve Birleşik Dillerin Farklı Özellikleri Hakkında Düşünceler” isimli denemesinde yer verdiği fikirlerin etraflı bir özetine ayrılmıştır. Son bölümde ise Smith’in dil hakkındaki görüşlerinin, iktisat ve ahlak alanındaki görüşleriyle bağlantısının kurulabileceği kimi noktalar kısaca vurgulanmıştır
