THE PROBLEM OF CAUSALITY IN AURELIUS AUGUSTINUS
Abstract
Aurelius Augustinus, as a middle age philosopher, deals with any problem and examines it within the God-centered framework, he looks at the problem of the causality from this perspective. However, he also mentions seminal reasons rationes seminales , the origins of which goes back to the myhtological tradition and the ancient Greek philosophers. Through making it a subject, he tries reconciling this thought with the Christianity. For this reason, two types of causality interwoven with one another are seen in his thought. The first one of these is the divine casuality which focuses on the divine creativity and the other one is the seminal reasons or the natural casuality that the God placed into the natural objects. Even though he puts more emphasis on the divine casuality than the other one, he tries to show that there is an order of nature and this order works within the cause and effect realtionship in the form of nature law. The seminal reason thought of Augustinus that works under the contra of God is highly interesting, for it refers to the order in nature and even because of the fact that he claims that this order is mathematical. Thus this article aims to question the divine and natural seminal causality thought of Augustinus, who developed an original theological philosophy through blending the Christianity with the philosophy of the Neoplatonism by means of referring to its historical origins
