THE MYTH-RITUAL DIMENSION AND VIEWING EXPERIENCE IN HISTORICAL HEROIC FILMS: THE REPRODUCTION OF SOCIAL STRUCTURE
Öz
This study aims to examine historical fantasy, or costume adventure films, and historical heroic films, which first appeared in Turkish cinema in the 1950s, in terms of their myth-ritual dimension and viewing experience in the context of the reproduction of social structure. Humankind has attempted to create meaning through rituals in the face of the reality of death; similarly, it has tried to control its anxieties related to the uncertainty of the future through practices that establish social order. Ritualistic structures continue to exist in modern society through various cultural products to meet the existential needs of humanity. In this context, the unceasing interest in melodramas, and heroic films in particular, which at first glance seem to have a limited relationship with reality and are reduced to the friend-foe dichotomy, can be explained by the fact that this genre has a myth-ritual dimension in terms of its content, structure, and sources. Historical heroic films, as a manifestation of ritual needs, reinforce the position of the individual within the social structure through their mythical content and the ritual experience they offer, and serve to reproduce the existing social order. Historical heroic films, like all types of films, are ritualistic cultural activities that ensure the consensual reproduction of social hierarchies. Historical heroic films, in particular, act as carriers of social norms and cultural symbols through their traditional connection to myths and rituals. Historical fantasies fulfill this role both on a film scale and through their relationship with the audience. Beginning with the 1952 film Kızıl Tuğ, this genre, rooted in myths, epics, and popular literature, continues to exist in our cultural life based on societal needs. Historical heroic films, considered genre films, have generally not been deemed noteworthy in terms of cinematic art or the historical reality they reflect. However, they attract audience interest in a dimension and continuity that the social sciences cannot ignore, due to the fact that they make certain social realities visible. Indeed, this interest in melodramas, which also include historical fantasies as a genre, has been linked to a form of emotional perception similar to that of the archaic period, or to a mythical consciousness. The aims of those who manage this interest are often explained by exploiting the legitimacy-creating power of rituals, which are the active dimension of myths. The relationship between historical heroic films, which are associated with ritual processes and functions, and myths has also been questioned in terms of their content and the sources they draw upon. Consequently, while studies in the literature focus on the relationship between films and myths and rituals, how this function is constructed and structured in the reproduction of social structures has not been discussed. Therefore, this study will not conduct a content analysis, but will support previous studies by relating the story and viewing experience to the sequences of the ritual process. Historical heroic films, which act as carriers of social norms and cultural symbols, present these mythical contents in movie theaters and on television, which emerge as ritual spaces. The film’s characters and the audience, within a ritualistic structure, in what Arnold van Gennep calls the “intermediate/threshold” zone, or Victor Turner’s “liminality” as members of a “communitas” internalize the social structure by learning the traditions and myths that represent the general authority of society, in accordance with the isolation, testing, and educational mission applied at this stage of the rituals, thereby repeatedly strengthening their belief in the structure.
