FOLKLORIC HAGIOGRAPHY: AN ANALYTICAL CONCEPT FOR THE STUDY OF FOLK NARRATIVES
Öz
Hagiographic narratives have traditionally been examined as literary and religious texts focusing on the lives, miracles, and exemplary qualities of sacred figures. However, their processes of formation, transmission, and reception reveal that they cannot be understood solely within the boundaries of literary or theological studies. Through continuous interaction with oral tradition, collective memory, local belief practices, ritual performance, and vernacal storytelling, hagiographic narratives acquire broader cultural meanings and become integral components of folklore. This study proposes folkloric hagiography as an analytical concept for the study of sacred narratives, aiming to reconsider the relationship between hagiography and folklore. Rather than introducing a new literary genre or replacing established narrative categories, the concept provides a framework for examining the folkloric dimensions of hagiographic narratives across diverse cultural contexts. The study adopts an interdisciplinary and comparative approach, drawing on hagiography studies, folklore theory, narratice studies, and cultural memory research. It explores the relationship between hagiography and a range of narrative forms, including myth, legend, epic, biography, heroic biography, religious fairy tales, parables, memorates, and menkıbe. Instead of treating these forms as isolated genres, the analysis focuses on their shared narrative structures, recurring motifs, cultural functions, and modes of transmission. Particular attention is given to the permeability of genre boundaries and to the ways sacred narratives are continually reshaped through oral circulation, local interpretation, and shifting cultural contexts. The findins demonstrate that hagiographic narratices function as dynamic cultural expressions rather than fixed textual forms. Their narrative devolopment depends on the interaction of historical memory, oral tradation, ritual practice, and vernacular culture. Motifs such as miraculous births, extraordinary journeys, heroic deeds, supernatural intervention, sacred places, and exemplary lives circulate across different narrative traditions, producing hybrid forms that cannot be adequately explained through conventional genre classifications alone. Accordingly, the proposed the concept of folkloric hagiography makes these interactions analytically visible by emphasizing the processes through which narratives of sacred figures are created, adapted, transmitted, and reinterpreted within communities. The study further argues that folkloric hagiography has particular value for Turkish literary and folklore studies. Turkish narratice traditions concerning saints, dervishes, and sacred places have generally been examined through separate genre categories such as menkıbe, legend, memorate, and kıssa. The proposed concept does not replace thes established terms; rather, it provides a complementary analytical vocabulary that enables their common hagiographic characteristics to be examined within a broader comparative perspective. By connecting Turkish narratice traditions with international discussions in hagiography and folklore studies, the concept contributes both to conceptual clarification and to interdisciplinary methodology. More broadly, the article demonstrates that folkloric hagiography offers a functional analytical framework for investigating the interaction of folklore, sacred narratives, and collective memory across different cultural traditions.
