Neoliberalism and Fiscal Austerity: An Essay for After Global Crisis

Yıl 2017, Sayı: 630, 41 - 54, 01.08.2017

Öz

The purpose of this study is to demonstrate the relevance of neo-liberalism to the fiscal austerity policies implemented after the 2008 global financial crisis. The study claims that although the neoliberal policies were criticized during the initial stages of the global financial crisis, these policies gained the leading position through the fiscal austerity policies. Given the fiscal austerity policies implemented in the countries at the periphery of the EU, it is observed that these policies are directly related to the neoliberal logic. The study explores the relationship between fiscal austerity policies and neo-liberalism by taking into account both the practices in the EU peripheral countries and the theoretical and political aspects of these policies.
