Local Holiday Trend: An Exploratory Study on Staycation

Öz

This study employed an exploratory research method using a systematic review accessed from the WoS database articles without restrictions using the keyword staycation. Accordingly, staycation refers to people spending time in local destinations around their homes, usually within 50 miles, instead of traveling for a vacation. Staycations first became popular as an affordable alternative during the 2008 financial crisis and have become even more widespread with the impact of the pandemic. During the pandemic, travel restrictions, health concerns, and safety concerns have encouraged individuals to plan vacations at home or surroundings. Additionally, staycations are shaped by psychological factors such as spending quality time with family, escaping from daily routine, and loyalty to local communities. This study makes policy recommendations such as encouraging local tourism, increasing health and safety standards, and offering family-oriented holiday options. It emphasizes that staycation can constitute a substantial alternative for future tourism policies.
