“Kurdish” Card of Imperialism

Yıl 2007, Cilt: 1 Sayı: 1, 155 - 193, 01.02.2007

Öz

In the article below, “Kurdish question” has been examined. First a definition of the so-called question is given and then the way its being treated as a weapon against Turkey and the Middle East Region by imperialism is explained in a historical perspective. Imperialism had come into contact with the Kurds firstly at the end of the First World War by means of the British troops. Britain tried to constitute a puppet Kurdish rule in Nortern Iraq and South-east Anatolia but for several reasons this project could not been realized then. Thereupon, the “Kurdistan” project was put off untill another time in which the conditions would be more appropriate. During and after the foundation of Israel, in accordance with their “peripheral strategy” Zionst leaders used the “Kurdish card” effectively. In the course of Kurds’ becoming autonomous and independent jews played a determinative role. Till mid-eighties as they needed Turkey because of the Cold War conditions, Western powers abstained from using the “Kurdish card” openly and applied some covered methods instead. However when it became clear that the Eastern Bloc would collapse they began to play their game without any attempt at secrecy. At present, a de facto Kurdish state has already been founded. All it needs to make its independence public is an international recognition and it seems that the realization of that condition is only a matter of time. What arouses interest is that, Turkey did nothing to prevent this inauspicious course though it is completely against her national interests. Furthermore, she became a part of it. After the Second World War, renouncing Atatürk’s main foreign policy principal of “complete independence” Turkey has put herself under the dependency of Western powers economically, politically and militarily. Since 1980 in which Turkey fell into the orbit of global capitalism, this dependency has reached to its peak. As a result of this erroneous strategy Turkey has paid very high prices in her foreign policy, one of which is the “Kurdish question.” As long as she insists upon doing so, she will pay even higher prices in the forthcoming years.
