EXPERIMENTAL INVESTIGATION OF EFFECTS OF PROPANE/BUTANE RATIO ON PERFORMANCE AND EMISSION IN A SPARK IGNITION ENGINE

Research was made on the supply and need of world energy and to find alternative and renewable energy sources
and to project the air pollution matter. LPG is an alternative fuel which can be used to obtain fuel economy and
to decrease exhaust emission values. The aim of this study, LPG which has got four different value of
propane/butane, has been determined the content of the LPG for need of the engine and the act of the exhaust
emissions. Experiments have been performed in the full load, stochiometric air/fuel ratio and different engine
speeds. At the end of the experiments, the use of LPG mixtures, compared with use of gasoline, causes decrease
in moment and power 3.6-7%, and provided improvement 42-62% in CO emission and 37-45% proportion in
HC emission. The usage of propane in 1800 min-1 engine speed produced higher than 3/7 p/b usage and about
1.3%; it caused loss of power and moment, in 3200 min-1 engine speed, caused loss of the power and moment in
–2.85% proportion. Between 2200-2400 min-1 engine speed the power of LPG mixtures became the same level,
after these engine speeds, the increase of butane proportion, increases the engine power and the moment. The
usage of propane in 1800 min-1 engine speed provided HC emission lower than the usage of 3/7 p/b; caused HC
emission 6% worse than the order. Usage of the propane, improved CO emissions in lower engine speeds, as
motor cycle increased, emission values, approached the same values for all LPG mixtures. Results of the
experiments are given as graphs.
