Ottoman Promenade Culture According to European Travellers of the XIXth Century

Through XIXth century Ottoman way of spending free time, their culture of recreation and activities at picnic areas attracted attention of European travellers, both men and women. They presented vivdly in their travelbooks detailed information about recreation spots, entertainment and activities performed there and theirs changes in time, which they observed and evaluated both traditional and new. From traveller’s observings not only naked informations, but also generalised depicting of Ottoman Turk’s image. European travellers’ aproaches to Ottoman society were naturally influenced by culture and norms of society, they grew up in; based on this both positive and negative deductions could be found in their comparisons of both cultural values. Showing with quotations, traveller’s writings were deeply influenced by some intellectual streams and discourses as Orientalism, Romantism

XIX. Yüzyıldaki Avrupalı Seyyahların Gözüyle Osmanlı’daki Mesire Kültürü

XIX. yüzyıl boyunca Osmanlıların dinlenme kültürü, boş zamanı geçirme şekli ve mesire yerlerindeki aktiviteleri Avrupalı hem erkek, hem kadın seyyahların dikkatlerini çekmiştir. Seyahatnamelerinde mesire yerlerinde gözlemledikleri ve hem yeni, hem geleneksel olarak değerlendirdikleri eğlence, etkinlikleri ve onların değişimi konusunda ayrıntılı bilgi renkli ve canlı şekilde aktarmışlardır. Seyyahların gözlemlerinden sadece bu konulardaki kuru bilgiler değil, Türklere genel bakış açıları da açıkça ortaya çıkar. Avrupalı seyyahların Osmanlı toplumuna yaklaşımları, doğal olarak seyyahların büyüdükleri toplumsal değerleri ve kültürü yansıtır, ona binaen her iki tarafın kültürel değerleri karşılaştıklarında, hem olumlu, hem olumsuz sonuçlara vardıklarına pek çok yerde rastlanır. Seyyahların yazdıklarında alıntılardan anlaşıldığı gibi, Oryantalizm, Romantizm gibi düşünsel akım ve söylemler etkili olmuştur
