VIEW OF SOME SPORTING ACTIVITIES IN OLD TURKISH CULTURE IN TERMS OF APPLICATION MOTIVES AND FUNCTIONS
Abstract
In historical process, it is known that sporting activities had been applicated for many reasons and realised different functions in terms of individual and society. In this study, it was aimed to asses application motives and functions of some sorting activities such as hunting, horse-riding, archery, wrestling, football and skiing which were very common in old Turkish culture. In addition to ritual based application motives, economic, military, social and pedagogic motives have also great importance in old Turkish sporting activities. Such activities whatever motives they have, have some functions such as to gain general movement formation, to improve physical, mental and social qualities and socialisation, to be healthy, to satisfy competition feelings and fun.
