Bazal hücreli kanser (BCC) derinin en sık görülen kanseridir. Nadir metastaz yapmasına rağmen lokal destrüksiyon yapmasından dolayı önemli bir morbidite nedenidir. Güneş ışığına maruziyet en önemli risk faktörüdür. Son yıllarda BCC patogenezini aydınlatma adına önemli ilerlemeler kaydedilmiştir. Hemen hepsinde olmasa da birçok BCC olgusunda Hedgehog sinyalinin aktivasyonunda artış saptanmakta ve bu da ileri evre hastalıkta hedefe yönelik tedavilerin geliştirilmesine olanak sağlamaktadır.
