Strategic management is predicated on the assumption that the environment is in a constant state of flux and requires the organisation to adapt accordingly. Strategic management involves relating the goals of the organisation to its operational environment - not simply in a reactive way but in a conscious and planned method. Even though strategic management has known for a comprehensive decision making mechanism and planning methods, sociological approaches to it have recently gained importance. This study presents a general approach about strategic management. It first gives a broad definition of strategy and then handles strategic management and their properties. Strategic management has been dealt with by giving the history, processes, and different approaches to it.

Stratejik yönetim sürekli değişim içinde olan çevreyi kontrol edebilecek ve bu değişime uyum sağlayabilecek örgütlere ihtiyaç olduğunu ileri sürer. Stratejik yönetim örgütün operasyonel çevresi için hedef belirler. Bu sırf tepkisel yönden bir hedef belirlemekten öte, bilinçli, planlanmış yöntemlerle olmalıdır. Günümüzde stratejik yönetim her ne kadar geniş çaptaki karar mekanizması ve planlama yöntemleri ile tanınmış olsa da, son zamanlarda bu konu üzerine sosyolojik yaklaşımlar önem kazanmaya başlamıştır. Bu çalışma, stratejik yönetim hakkında genel bir yaklaşım sunmaktadır. Burada ilk olarak stratejinin geniş bir tanımı verilmiş, sonra da stratejik yönetim ve özellikleri ele alınmıştır.
