Covid-19 Effect in Sports Organizations

Öz

Emerging in Wuhan, China in December 2019 and becoming major health problem by causing the
death of hundreds of thousands of people in the 21st century, the Covid-19 (2019-nCoV) pandemic has
taken the entire world by storm. In addition to its effects in health and social areas, Covid-19 has
caused many changes in the commercial, economic and sporting worlds. Due to the density of the
audience and the scope and diversity of the activities, the sports sector attracts great attention from
all segments of society. In line with the directives of the World Health Organization (WHO), national
and international sports organizations, sports federations and sports clubs have taken serious
precautions during the epidemic. This study seeks to review the situation of sports events both at
the national and international levels during the Covid-19 pandemic. The research was carried out
following the scanning method. The universalization of the epidemic caused the postponement and /
or cancellation of the Olympics, World Championships, federation and club events, and national and
regional events. As a result, underlying reason for postponing or cancelling of sports events is health,
while the cancellation of sports events also affects the sports industry economically.

Spor Organizasyonlarında Covid-19 Etkisi

Öz

Çin’in Wuhan şehrinde 2019 Aralık ayında ortaya çıkarak 21. Yüzyılda yüzbinlerce kişinin ölümüne
neden olan ve önemli bir sağlık sorunu haline gelen Covid-19 (2019-nCoV) pandemisi ciddi boyutlara
ulaşmıştır. Sağlık ve sosyal alandaki etkilerinin yanı sıra; ticari, ekonomik ve sportif anlamda birçok
değişimin ortaya çıkmasına neden olmuştur. İzleyici kitlesinin yoğunluğu ve yapılan faaliyetlerin
kapsam ve çeşitliliği nedeniyle spor sektörü, toplumun her kesimi tarafından yoğun ilgi görmüştür.
Dünya Sağlık Örgütü (DSÖ)’nün direktifleri doğrultusunda; ulusal ve uluslararası spor kuruluşları, spor
federasyonları ve spor kulüpleri salgın sürecinde ciddi önlemler almışlardır. Bu çalışmada, Covid-19
pandemi sürecinde ulusal ve uluslararası düzeyde spor organizasyonlarının durumunun incelenmesi
amaçlanmıştır. Araştırma tarama yöntemiyle gerçekleştirilmiştir. Salgının evrensel boyutlara
ulaşması ile; olimpiyatların, dünya şampiyonalarının, federasyon ve kulüp organizasyonlarının,
ulusal ve bölgesel organizasyonların ertelenmesine ve/veya iptal edilmesine karar verilmiştir. Sonuç
olarak, bir yanda spor organizasyonlarının ertelenmesinde veya iptal edilmesindeki esas durumun
insan sağlığı olduğu görülürken; diğer yanda söz konusu spor organizasyonlarının iptalinin spor
endüstrisini ekonomik açıdan olumsuz etkilediği görülmektedir.
