I am a behavioral neurologist with a PhD in biophysics working on electroencephalography
of dementia and neurodegenerative disorders.
After becoming neurology specialist, I completed my fellowship in behavioral neurology
under supervision of Dr. Bruce Miller at UCLA in 1993. After returning to Turkey, I founded
an outpatient dementia clinic in Dokuz Eylül University, as one of the pioneer clinics in the
country. I was also one of the founders of Alzheimer’s Association in Turkey in Istanbul in
1997, and then became founder chair of Izmir local branch in 2000. Since then I served to
thousands of people with dementia and their caregivers through dementia clinic,
neuroscience department, and Alzheimer’s Association. Our dementia outpatient clinic
collaborated with Faculty of Nursing, Ministry of Education, and the Faculty of Physical
Rehabilitation resulted in many MSc or PhD theses on care of caregivers, educational
programs for relatives, in governmental collaborations for organizing certificate programs
for professional-caregivers.
Since 1995, I worked as either a site principal investigator or country coordinator for many
drug clinical trials, including donepezil, rivastigmine, memantine, galantamine, and many
other Phase 3 drug trials for Alzheimer’s or Parkinson’s dementia in Turkey.
My other contributions to the field included serving as a commission member of the Ministry
of Health for the preparation of a dementia protocol for the country.
In neurology and neurosciences departments, I was mentor of 32 many neurology
residences’ and postgrad theses on biomarkers, experimental studies, event-related
potentials, behavioral/cognitive scales, development of virtual reality tests in the field of
dementia and related disorders.
About 15 years ago, I founded department of neuroscience in Health Sciences Institute
bridging the basic scientists and clinical neurologists/psychiatrists. After 15 years of
collaboration, our neuroscience department became one of the most prolific science centers
in our country and university. In 2010, our dementia center became one of the center of
excellence in European Alzheimer Disease Consortium. I served as representative of Turkish
national funding agency (TÜBITAK, The Scientific and Technological Research Council of
Turkey) in the European Union in the JPND initiative in 2007-2009. Then, our center
collaborated with many centers in Europe, mainly with Italy, France and Ireland, and the
UCSF of USA.
After our participation in Tau consortium, our neuroscience department started to the
projects on induced pluripotent stem cell funded by Turkish governmental funding agency
(TUBITAK) in which I serve as the principal investigator.
Recently, I was selected to serve as the vice program chair in electrophysiology professional
interest area of The Alzheimer's Association International Society to Advance Alzheimer's
Research and Treatment (ISTAART) and selected to European Academy of Neurology (EAN),
ALS and FTD working group’s executive committee in 2021.
Currently, I work full time neurology teaching and researcher professor in Dokuz Eylül University, Faculty of Medicine, and as guest researcher in International
Biomedicine and Genome Center, Izmir, Turkey whilst continuing to supervise four
postgraduate theses in Department of Neurosciences and directing a national funding
agency project.
