While the Olympic Games offer great economic, social and cultural opportunities for host countries, they also have a significant impact on their sporting performance. This research aims to determine whether hosting the Games leads to lasting improvements in sporting performance or only temporary increases by examining the changes in medal counts of host countries before, during and after hosting the Olympic Games. The research question was determined as “Does hosting the Olympics lead to permanent improvements in the sporting performance of countries?”. In data analysis, hypotheses were tested using paired samples t test and independent samples t test. As a result of the analysis, while it was determined that hosting the Olympic Games had a significant contribution to sporting success in the short term, it was observed that this success was not sustainable and did not continue in the long term. As a result, it is concluded that sport policies and investments should not focus only on the Olympic Games period, but should be directed towards strategies that will support long-term sport development.
