Towards a Rigorous Definition of the Sharing Economy: Preventing Conceptual Stretching

Yıl 2025, Cilt: 9 Sayı: 18, 86 - 107, 25.12.2025

Since 2013, we have witnessed a rapid increase in the number of articles on the sharing economy indexed in the Web of Science (WoS) database. However, these studies lack a consensus on how to define the concept. In this regard, our study focuses on developing a strict conceptual definition based on existing definitions in the literature and proposes a new definition that includes six core attributes. The definition most similar to ours was proposed by Eckhardt et al. (2019) and published in the Journal of Marketing, the most prominent journal in of marketing. However, the definition by Eckhardt et al. (2019) also carries the risk of conceptual stretching. Our new definition—comprising the attributes of idle capacity, digital platform, crowdsourcing, peer-to-peer transaction, compensation, and access-based usage—provides a solid theoretical foundation for future research on the concept of the sharing economy.
