Silhouette as the Third Dimension of Conservation in the Historic Environment: An Examination of Preservation Issues from a Media Perspective
Abstract
The change in the silhouette of historic environments is often a problem rather than a change and development. The problem of silhouette in the historical environment has attracted attention in recent years as one of the important issues that occupy the national and international agenda. Within the scope of this study, the problems experienced in historical skylines were discussed and a research was conducted in the sample of Turkey by taking into account the situations reflected in national news. In the study, news sources as media intermediaries were selected to identify practices that have a negative impact on the skyline in historical environments and Google news search engine was used to access these news. Google news search engine; as a result of the searches carried out with the keywords “historical environment”, “silhouette”, “urban view”, “general view of the city”, related news was detected and examined with the content analysis method. The examples were evaluated and explained in line with the design parameters affecting the silhouette in national and international documents on conservation. In the light of the findings obtained, the national agenda on silhouette has been conveyed and it has been desired to create a critical base for historical silhouette control. As a result of the study; it was determined that the reasons such as ignoring the third-dimensional effect of the silhouette, the uncertainties in the silhouette control and the management complexity create great deficits in the preservation of the original appearances. It is also pointed out that national and international principles regarding the silhouette issue should influence the design and that new buildings in historical textures should be realized by paying attention to the impact on the original views.
