The transformation from painting to landscape design in the interaction between landscape architecture and art: Roberto Burle Marx’s design
Abstract
The common language employed by architecture and art disciplines during the formation of works is design. For this reason, design is a bridge between architecture and art disciplines. Creativity, which is at the core of design, necessitates interdisciplinary knowledge. The unique character of landscape architecture requires landscape architects to have a broad knowledge of natural sciences, social sciences and engineering disciplines, and artistic creativity. It can be argued that the foundations and functioning of landscape architecture develop in parallel with art, and painting has been the art discipline that has most influenced landscape design in this process ensuring that the creative expression form in the disciplines of design, architecture, and art becomes visible in the space. Space is the embodied form of creative thinking in architecture and art disciplines. In this context, urban spaces provide opportunities for the exhibition of art. Urban green spaces are the exhibition space of artistic works and it is possible to see the form of art in landscape design in such spaces. In the present study, the interaction between landscape design and painting was examined over the works of landscape architect and painter Roberto Burle Marx. The interaction between Roberto Burle Marx’s paintings, which were influenced by cubism and surrealism, and his designs were revealed in terms of basic design principles and elements.
