Xeriscaping as a water-saving landscape design: Arizona State University Tempe Campus context

Abstract

With the global water crisis, water-saving landscape design has gained importance, and the implementation of xeriscaping has accelerated. This study aims to calculate water consumption of landscape design and to determine water-saving design principles with increasing xeric landscape area, in the case of the hot-arid Arizona State University Tempe campus area. Study methodology comprises four stages: (1) determination of areas with three different landscape patterns (grass, mixed, xeric) in the campus area; (2) determination of plant species and plant densities used in the fields; (3) calculation of water consumption; and (4) determination of water consumption change and developing suggestions as a result of scenarios replacing 25%, 50%, 75% and 100% of grass areas with xeric landscaping. Results show that the grass area has high water consumption while xeriscaping has low water consumption. Moreover, 85% of water was saved when all grass areas were replaced with xeriscape. 20% of the water was saved due to replacing 25% of the lawns with xeriscape. The results are important for local governments to increase the implementation of xeriscaping in terms of providing economical, environmental, and sustainable water management.
