Social and Physical Structure of Shops and Their Conservation Problems in Skopje Turkish Bazaar
Abstract
The Turks grasped their value accumulation with the inheritance from their conquered lands. The identification, which Köprülü conceptualized as Istanbul-Ottoman Civilization, found a place in Rumeli with the conquest of Skopje in 1392. To realize the Skopje Turkish Bazaar by the city’s character and contemporary living conditions within the framework of accepted conservation principles, conservation methods based on the cultural sustainability of the bazaar were tried to be determined. The social structure of the traditional Turkish bazaar has been shaped under the influence of the ahi order and foundation culture. The typology of the physical structure of the shops was formed by their layout, dimensions, roof formations, materials, showcase formation, and upper floor formation. The social status of the bazaar was measured by surveys made with craftsmen and visitors. Accordingly, the professional continuity and willingness to intervene of the artisan and the reason for the residence and arrival of the visitors were evaluated. In the evaluation part, suggestions were presented within the framework of contemporary conservation understanding for the bazaar.
