A TEACHER OF HUNGARIAN ORIGIN AT THE VILLAGE INSTITUTES: GÁSPÁR NAGYPÁL

Abstract

Since the foundation of the Republic of Turkey, Hungarian scientists, experts and teachers have worked in institutions providing vocational and technical education. In the 1940s, the opening of the Village Institutes allowed them to be employed in these areas as well, and thus the knowledge of the Hungarians in the fields of construction, infrastructure, etc. was greatly utilized. Hungarian educators, who have worked on many works from the construction activities of the institutes to the provision of electricity and water, have thus made important contributions to the structuring of these institutions. In the archive documents, it is stated that three people of Hungarian origin were employed in these institutions and the name Gáspár Nagypál is mentioned among them. This article focuses on Nagypál's life and work in Turkey. Although it is known that Nagypál was born and educated in Szeged, Hungary, and that he was trained as a machinist, no record has been found as to why he was selected among those to be appointed in the Village Institutes and when he came to Turkey. There are different opinions in the literature regarding the job description of Nagypál in the institutions where he worked, and this research primarily aims to clarify this situation. Although he is described as a foreman, master teacher, expert and teacher in various sources, the documents in the Unclassified Archive of the Göl Village Institute reveal that he was a teacher. In addition, his signature as a "teacher", his portrait, various details about his studies and correspondence within the Göl Village Institute are included in this archive in his own personal file as well as in the Teacher and Civil Servants Registry Book. These documents confirm that he served as a teacher. It is known that Nagypál took part in the installation of electrical equipment in Göl, Çifteler, Hasanoğlan, Kepirtepe and Akçadağ Village Institutes. However, he was occasionally assigned to other institutes or educational institutions. The main element that has not changed in these processes is that it transfers its technical knowledge to the students and does the work with them in the collobarative work. Thus, Nagypál has taken his place in our educational history as one of the practitioners of the principle of “training for the job”, which is prominent in the Village Institutes. Although he served in Turkey for a long time, the information about Nagypál remained mostly between the lines. More importantly, no original academic work on his life and work has been found. When an evaluation is made in the context of the historical literature of the Republic of Turkey, this issue emerges as a deficiency. From this point of view, another aim of this research is to provide concise information about Nagypál’s life and to mention his work in Turkey. Issues such as the determination of the institutes to which he was assigned and which studies he focused on, and the thoughts of the students about him constituted the field of study of this research. Literature review, archive review and document analysis methods were used in the research. Data on Nagypál’s life, and especially on his education, have mostly come from Hungarian sources. In order to reveal its place and importance in the process of Village Institutes, archive documents and academic studies were used.
