HUN NAMES IN LATE ANTIQUE HISTORIANS (VI-IX. CENTURY)

The Hun presence in Western Eurasia is witnessed from the last quarter of the IVth century. The activities of the Huns in the West deeply affected the balance of power, especially the Roman Empire. The Huns, who reached the peak of their power with Attila, started to dissolve rapidly after Attila. After the political end of the Hun Empire, Turkish tribes such as the Sabirs, Kutrigurs, Utrigurs, Eftalids, and Avars were seen by historians as the continuation of the Hun remnants, and these people were called Huns. This use of the name Hun shows the continuation of the tradition of anachronism that came from Herodotus. Herodotus mentioned Asian tribes as Scythians. Afterwards, the Huns started to be referred to as Scythians as of the IVth century. This archaic usage tradition was replaced by the Hun designation as of the VIth century.
When we look at the Western sources of Late Antiquity, the information given about the Turkish people is not included separately but in addition to Romanist, Byzantine, Germanist, and Slavic studies. As far as they mention, we know about the early Turkish presence in Western Eurasia. When we look at the Eastern and Western sources providing information about the Turkish presence in Western Eurasia in the 6th century, we encounter limitations. The continuing atmosphere of chaos in the West after the end of the Western Roman Empire had a negative impact on historiography. The fact that stability was better in the Eastern Roman Empire compared to the West created a positive atmosphere in historiography. For this reason, Eastern Roman sources provide more historical data and facilitate the examination of the Hun ethnonym during the research process. In our study, starting from the historians of the VIth century such as Procopius, Agathias, and Menandrus, and including the IXth century, the Hun designations for Turkic peoples in Late Antiquity sources will be analyzed.
