A SELJUK ARCHITECTURAL RELIC THAT CHALLENGES HISTORY: NIGDE ALAEDDIN MOSQUE
Öz
Following the victory at the Battle of Manzikert, thanks to the contributions of the Turkish principalities and the Anatolian Seljuk State, the Anatolian region quickly became a Turkish homeland. Especially during the Anatolian Seljuk State, Anatolian cities were meticulously developed, and significant construction projects were undertaken in many places, leaving a Turkish mark on the region. Niğde, in this context, is one of the cities adorned with unique examples of Seljuk architecture, becoming a Turkish homeland. Undoubtedly, one of the most important Seljuk architectural works in the city is the Alaeddin Mosque. The Alaeddin Mosque is a Turkish seal inscribed on Niğde by the Anatolian Seljuk State. The mosque is one of the most important indicators of the Seljuk State's artistic achievements. The Alâeddin Mosque, which was built in 1223 by Zeyneddin Beşâre, the Governor of Niğde at the time, to Sıddık and Gazi masters, is a rectangular building built entirely of stone at a dominant point of the city. The mosque has two entrance gates, the main entrance gate faces the east facade and the other gate faces the north facade. The mosque is completely covered with stone and there are three domes on the south side. The crown gate facing the east side of the mosque is a very beautiful example of Seljuk motifs embroidered on stones. The geometric ornaments in the interior of the mosque, the stonework of the mihrab, the different patterns and figures on each elephant leg, the female figure formed by the shadow falling on the entrance door on the east side at certain times of the day make the mosque unique. The study utilizes archival documents, historical chronicles, travelogues, studies on mosque architecture, and fieldwork. The aim of the study is to uncover the historical development of the Niğde Alaeddin Mosque, one of the most important architectural monuments of the Anatolian Seljuk State and still standing today.
