FROM THREATENING RHETORIC TO DIPLOMATIC LANGUAGE: TURKISH IMAGE IN 14TH CENTURY CRUSADE PROJECTS
Öz
This study examines records concerning Turks in Crusade projects prepared in the 14th century, focusing on the Turkish image portrayed in these works and the attitudes of theorists shaped by the prevailing conditions. After the loss of Acre, the last Crusader stronghold on the eastern Mediterranean coast in 1291, Crusader rhetoric aimed at recapturing the Holy Land, particularly Jerusalem, became popular once again. Mamluk Sultanate, who had eliminated the Crusader states, disrupted the trade network stretching from the eastern Mediterranean coast to Europe and threatened the Armenians of Cilicia and the Crusader Kingdom of Cyprus. When the activities of the Turkish principalities established in Anatolia and along the Aegean coast were added to this, alarm bells began to ring in Europe, heralding a new Turkish advance. This political environment, which compelled the papacy to take urgent measures, also marked the beginning of a preparatory process that revived the spirit of the Crusades. At the papal request, various people who had been to the East on different occasions began to draw up plans indicating what preparations should be made to regain the lost territories. This led to the emergence of the Recuperatione Terrae Sanctae, a collection of works by authors such as Fidenzio da Padova, Ramon Llull, Hayton of Korykos, Marino Sanudo Torsello, Guillaume Adam, Philippe de Mézières and many others, all concerning Crusade projects. These projects, which focus on issues such as the most suitable route for the new Crusades, the political and military situations of the organisations in the East, the geographical features of the region, and the number of ships or soldiers that needed to be assembled, also contain many records about the Mamluk Sultanate, the Turkish principalities, or the Ottomans, depending on the period in which they were written. Thus, these sources serve as supplementary materials that allow access to different information not reflected in Eastern sources or enable comparison with existing data.
A review of Crusade projects written in Latin or Old French revealed that approximately a dozen works provided information about the Turks. This study, prepared by examining these records, focuses on the perception of Turks in Europe at the end of the 13th century and during the 14th century, based on the views of the theorists who prepared the Crusade project. In conclusion, the study analysed the necessity for Crusader theorists to consider the Turkish threat and the circumstances under which the threatening rhetoric permeating Crusade projects was transformed into diplomatic language.
