THE BOMBING OF THE OTTOMAN BANK IN THESSALONIKI (1903)

Bulgaria, established as a principality within the Danube Province under the Ottoman Empire following the 1878 Treaty of Berlin, intensified its activities in the Balkans with the aim of transforming its newly acquired autonomy into independence. During this process, Bulgarian committees aimed to create unrest in the region by carrying out bomb attacks and political assassinations against the Turks with whom they had lived for centuries. The main goal of the Bulgarian committees was to secure the intervention of the Great Powers to detach Thessaloniki, Monastir, and Kosovo Provinces from Ottoman rule. The Principality of Bulgaria, which became one of the centers of separatist activities in the Balkans, did not hesitate to support the committees that carried out the bombing attacks on the Ottoman Bank branch in Thessaloniki and its surroundings. Following the bombing of Thessaloniki by the "Bulgarian Committee of Subversion" as a result of the negligence of local law enforcement, the cautious attitude displayed by the Muslim population and Ottoman soldiers was appreciated by contemporary observers. The investigation conducted by the Ottoman State to uncover the background of the event revealed that the Principality of Bulgaria was directly linked to the subversive committees in Macedonia. This study, primarily based on documents obtained from the Ottoman Archives, examines the events that followed the bombing of the Ottoman Bank in Thessaloniki by committee members disguised as women and priests. This study attempts to shed light on the casualties and injuries resulting from the incident, the involvement of the Skopje Bulgarian Night School in the event, the approaches of The Times, The Standard, and The Globe newspapers to the Thessaloniki Incident, the sources of the dynamite used in the attack, the conditions of those arrested after the incident, and the subsequent deportations.

SELANİK’TE OSMANLI BANKASI’NIN BOMBALANMASI (1903)
Öz
1878 Berlin Antlaşması ile Osmanlı Devleti’ne bağlı bir prenslik statüsünde Tuna Vilâyeti’nde kurulan Bulgaristan, elde ettiği muhtariyeti bağımsızlığa dönüştürmek amacıyla Balkanlarda faaliyetlerini yoğunlaştırmıştır. Bu süreçte Bulgar komitacıları, asırlardır birlikte yaşadıkları Türklere karşı bombalı saldırılar ve siyasi cinayetler gerçekleştirerek bölgede karışıklık çıkarmayı hedeflemiştir. Bulgar komitelerinin temel amacı Büyük Devletlerin müdahalesini sağlayarak Selanik, Manastır ve Kosova Vilâyetlerini Osmanlı hâkimiyetinden kopartmaktır. Balkanlardaki ayrılıkçı faaliyetlerin merkezlerinden biri haline gelen Bulgraristan Prensliği, Selanik’te Osmanlı Bankası Şubesi’ne ve çevresine yönelik gerçekleştirilen bombalı saldırıları düzenleyen komitecilere destek vermekten kaçınmamıştır. Yerel kolluk kuvvetlerinin ihmali neticesinde “Bulgar Fesad Komitesi” tarafından Selanik’te gerçekleştirilen bombalama eylemi sonrasında Müslüman halk ile Osmanlı askerlerinin sergilediği temkinli tutum dönemin gözlemcileri tarafından takdir edilmiştir. Osmanlı Devleti’nin olayın arka planını ortaya çıkarmaya yönelik yürüttüğü tahkikat sonucunda Bulgaristan Prensliği’nin Makedonya’daki fesat komiteleriyle doğrudan ilişkili olduğu anlaşılmıştır. Ağırlıklı olarak Osmanlı Arşivinden temin edilen belgelere dayanan bu çalışmada, Selanik’te Osmanlı Bankası’nın kadın ve rahip kılığına giren komiteciler tarafından bombalanmasının ardından ortaya çıkan gelişmeler incelenmiştir. Bu kapsamda olay sonucunda meydana gelen can kayıpları ve yaralanmalar, Üsküp Bulgar Gece Mektebi’nin hadiseyle ilişkisi, The Times, The Standard ve The Globe Gazetelerinin Selanik Hadisesi’ne yaklaşımları, saldırıda kullanılan dinamitlerin temin yolları, olay sonrasında tutuklanan şahısların durumları ile yapılan sürgünler ortaya konulmaya çalışılmıştır.
