Clothing Design Suitable for Different Body Types

Sociological, ecological, and economic developments around the world have led to the emergence of the concept of sustainability in the fashion industry, just as in every other sector. The textile industry alone accounts for 20% of global environmental pollution. Today, the textile sector is closely following sustainability both in industrial and fashion contexts and is simultaneously conducting new research and producing innovative solutions in both areas. In the context of contemporary sustainable and fast fashion, new approaches in clothing practices have gained significant importance for both producers and consumers. One of the most remarkable of these approaches is the design of clothing that accommodates different body types. This field is rapidly evolving into an area that provides convenience for users with different physical characteristics but similar expectations. Garment design suitable for various body types is an approach in which design patterns are adjusted and developed according to different size ranges through adaptable technical details such as zippers, buttons, elastic bands, and stoppers. It also supports women during phases of weight fluctuation in their lives by ensuring their wardrobes remain functional and usable (Shahidi, 2024). This model-independent approach not only provides suitability across sizes but also contributes to sustainability efforts by both producers and consumers. Garment design for different body types expands the boundaries of modern fashion by emphasizing variation and adaptability. This approach offers users broad opportunities for customization in terms of both functionality and aesthetics. Garments designed for diverse body types, supported by ergonomic design, technological fabrics, and eco-friendly materials, enhance fit performance and comfort across sizes. Prototyping and testing processes confirm the effectiveness of the designs, while feedback ensures continuous improvement. This design method allows garments to be customized based on different body ranges and aesthetic preferences, offering a more comfortable and efficient experience in everyday life. Within the scope of this study, adaptable (shared-size) garments will be designed for women in the size range of 36–42. These include a skirt with side stoppers and elastic that can be adjusted to fit sizes 36–42; a pair of trousers with buttons on the front waist and sides, featuring an internal elastic system that can be fastened from the center front to adjust between sizes; a blouse equipped with two zippers on both front and back that not only allow for adjustable sizing between 36–42 but also offer alternative design options; and a poncho with button and buttonhole support on the sides, again adjustable for the same size range. The selected material for this collection, Dalgıç fabric, is a high-quality and durable textile. The test results demonstrate its favorable properties in terms of fabric weight, pilling resistance, water resistance, perspiration fastness, and color fastness to rubbing. In particular, its excellent performance in the pilling test ensures that the fabric surface remains smooth and visually appealing over time. Dalgıç fabric provides a balanced combination of aesthetics and functionality, making it a suitable material for designers seeking quality and comfort in modern fashion. The proposed designs aim to be customizable and multifunctional products suitable for various body sizes.
