A Comparative Study on the Relationship between Construction Materials and Architectural Flexibility
Öz
For years, architects have focused on many different concepts to shape their designs, looking for ways to increase the durability and longevity of buildings. Structures designed for a specific program become inadequate as needs change, ending their useful life before they become physically obsolete. A well-designed building should be able to incorporate the innovations of its time, meet changing user needs and functions, withstand environmental factors, and continue to be used over time. The concept of flexibility, which we can define as the ability to adapt to changing conditions, is one of the elements that can ensure the durability of the building. There are several ways to create a flexible structure. One of the most important elements that should be considered for the building to continue its existence in the face of different needs that arise over time is the material used. This study aims to make designers aware of the importance of integrating new materials and technologies into the building for the future of architecture and to clarify the relationship between material selection and flexibility. Accordingly, the concept of flexibility and its importance are first emphasized, and the contributions of existing and emerging material types to building flexibility are discussed through examples from both present and future perspectives. As a result, using the right materials and innovative approaches in architectural design offers more flexible, economical, and sustainable solutions.
