With a rich agricultural history, many barns in the United Kingdom have been facing neglect and abandonment in recent years. This study investigates the trends in the transformation of traditional barns into contemporary and usable structures in England. It evaluates the intersection between the preservation of architectural heritage and the needs of modern life.
The United Kingdom is one of the countries that have efforts to protect and preserve historic buildings. While it has signed various regulations and laws on the scale of the renovation of historical buildings, it has strong structures created through civil and official channels for the protection of the structures within the borders of its country. In addition, the framework of conservation efforts has been collected and documented by written sources. The country, which understands the importance of environmental and architectural heritage, hosts successful studies and practices on this matter. Interventions for barn structures with high potential on an interior scale are also within the scope of these studies.
This research focuses on six different barn transformation projects located in England. The basic approach to the evaluation of barn transformations is the degree of preservation, the old-new distinction, and the harmony between the structure and the new function. In this direction, evaluation tables created.
