CO2 REFRIGERANT ECO-DESIGN OUTDOOR UNIT DEVELOPMENT FOR REFRIGERATED DISPLAY CABINET

Abstract

Reducing the environmental impacts of energy systems and efficient use of energy are important for ecological balance. Standards and regulations in cooling systems limit the use of refrigerants, which consume energy, trap heat and increase global warming through the greenhouse effect. In refrigerated Display cabinets (RDC), there has been a recent increase in the use of natural refrigerants, especially carbon dioxide, ammonia, hydrocarbons, etc. to reduce environmental impacts. With the developing refrigeration and chemical industries, different fluids with low global warming potential (GWP) and ozone depletion potential (ODP) values have begun to be used. Today, environmentally friendly refrigerants are preferred, especially carbon dioxide CO2 (R744), which has a GWP value of 1 and an ODP value of 0, and has become an important alternative because it does not burn or ignite, and does not contain any toxic substances. In this sense in study, a compact eco-design outdoor unit containing multiple compressors was designed using CO2 (R744), an environmentally friendly natural refrigerant, for refrigerated display cabinet in positive temperature (PT) (-1 °C / +5 °C ) and negative temperature (NT) (-15 °C / -30 °C ) classes. The designed outdoor unit has the ability to synchronously operate RDCs in multiple different temperature classes in supermarkets. The designed central (remote) cooler with outdoor unit was tested in test rooms within the scope of TS EN ISO 23953-2: 2017 standard and its performance was analyzed using PS-NS compressors and multi-ejector system. Total energy consumption for coolers (indoor units) in PS and NS classes is calculated as 27.86 kWh/day and 36.1 kWh/day, respectively, and the energy classes are C and E classes, respectively. The maximum and minimum package temperatures for these coolers are in the range of -0.8 / +5 °C and -16 / -27 °C respectively. As a result of the analyses, the required cooling loads at different temperatures were met and the temperature class specified within the scope of the standard was achieved for the products cooled in the cabinet. So, with this design, supermarket etc. by eliminating the need for an outdoor unit for each different temperature in refrigerated display cabinet in sales areas, a CO2 refrigerated cooling system that provides different temperature classes with a single system has been introduced.
