Different surface treatment processes are applied on cast piece made of zinc-aluminum alloys in order to increase their service life and improve their effective use. Among the alternatives, electrochemical coating process becomes remarkable due to its practical use and its suitability for mass production. Different processes are used in order increase the adhesion of the electrochemically deposited film to the cast piece made of zincaluminum alloys. Electrochemical deposition of copper as “inter-layer” is mostly used for this purpose. In this study, the properties of acidic and cyanide electrolytic copper coating process which can be applied both as bond/barrier/intermediate coat are deeplty investigated; then 8 samples (door handles) made of zinc aluminum alloys subjected to various coatings (chrome, nickel, lacquer) with copper intermediate layer were tested according to ASTM B117. The evaluation of the samples’ salt spray test results proves that when the Cu film is on top the corrosion resistance of the sample is very low and when the Cu film is deposited as intermediate layer, depending on the electrolyte composition, the film properties change as well as its corrosion resistance. The results show that the lacquer-coated piece has the highest corrosion resistance, and the existence of the cyanide copper coating as intermediate layer improves the corrosoino resistance of the piece; which is justified by visual inspections as well as the EDS and RAMAN analyses within the text
