EVALUATION OF ROTTERDAM, ANTWERP AND HAMBURG PORTS IN THE SMART PORT CONTEXT

Yıl 2020, Cilt: 9 Sayı: 18, 1 - 16, 04.01.2021

With the rapid development of international trade, competition among companies has started to take place on an international scale. One of the factors that will enable companies to take the lead in international competition is to provide logistics services in a less costly manner and to ensure customer satisfaction. Considering that a significant part of international trade is transported by sea, the importance of ports is revealed. In recent years, ports have been turning to a technology-based transformation. This transformation is called "smart port". The purpose of this study is to evaluate the ports of Rotterdam, Antwerp and Hamburg within the framework of smart ports. Operation, energy, environment, safety and security dimensions of the smart port have been evaluated by using a holistic multiple cases study design. Findings show that the ports developed various applications and regulations in all dimensions. Especially the different applications of the Port of Rotterdam in operation dimension attract attention. Also, ports focus on sustainability-oriented technologies for environmental and energy dimensions. safety and security, it is observed that measures have been developed on cyber safety and security arising from the use of intense information and communication technologies as well as physical safety and security.
