This cross-sectional, descriptive study attempts to determine how mothers care for their children when they have a cough. Its sample group included mothers of children under 6 years of age who were hospitalized in the Children's Hospital of Ondokuz Mayıs University. Previously prepared 25 question forms inquiring about personal information and mothers’ ideas and practices concerning children’s coughing were filled out by the researchers during face-to-face interviews with the mothers who agreed to participate in the study. The completed forms were uploaded to a computer and analyzed using SPSS 17 statistics software, and statistical tests (frequency, percentages and chi-squared) were performed. The significance level was set to p<0.05.
Of the participant mothers, 33.3% were 26-30 years old, 52.2% resided in urban areas, 83.9% were members of a nuclear family, 65.6% had sufficient income to pay their expenses, 32.8% had finished primary school and 78.9% were housewives. Of these women, 36.7% said they visit a doctor when their children have a cough, and 72.2% said that they give cough syrup to their children without consulting a doctor. Considering the kinds of care these mothers give to their children with a cough, 72.8% administer herbs such as linden flowers and mint, 73.3% give their children mandarins or oranges to eat, 19.4% give their children milk with honey to drink, 15% smear Vicks VapoRub on their children’s bodies and 15.6% have them inhale steam at home.
