This study was planned to analysis the relationship between alexithymia, depression, anxiety and empathy skills of senior nursing students. This study, which was designed in a descriptive and correlational design, was carried out in the fall semester of the 2017-2018 academic year with the 125 students in the nursing department of a university in Ankara. Sociodemographic data form, Toronto Aleximia Scale (TAS), Basic Empathy Scale (BES), Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) and Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI) were used as data collection tools. Descriptive statistics, correlation, Kruskal-Wallis and hierarchical regression tests were used in the analysis of the data. A total of 125 university students 109 females, 16 males with a mean age of 21.54±0.97 years, participated in our study. The participants' BDI score average was 10.26±7.38, BAI score average 9.57±8.85, TAS score average 53.05±7.95, and BES score 58.49±4.68. It was found that there was a positive and significant relationship between TAS and BDI, BAI, and BES (p<.05). As a result of stepwise regression analysis of the variables predicted to have an effect on the medians of TAS total scores, the independent variables determined to have a significant effect were depression and anxiety (p<.001). Interpersonal communication is important in the nursing, and alexithymia can affect both professional practices and communication skills of nurses with their environment. Evaluation of the effect of alexithymia on the mental health problems of students may provide solutions to reduce the negative effects of alexithymia in the early stages.
