Urban historiography studies do not date back to ancient times. The urban historiography, which had later become a part of Islamic history, is not a very well known area in our country. In fact, although our country is one of the best countries in which urban history can be written in many aspects, there are still gaps in academic studies regarding urban historiography in Turkey. In Islamic history, urban historiography dates back to the earliest periods of Islam. We see examples of urban historiography in the works that introduce the holy cities and narrate the conquests of these cities.
Like urban historiography, Baburnama (Babur's memoirs) is also one of the works that has not attracted scholarly attention in our country. The book, which consists of much information on history, geography, literature and many other fields, has not been sufficiently recognized.
This article begins with presenting information about urban historiography. Then, the history of Samarkand is examined in detail. The aim of this paper is to analyze these two subjects together through Baburnama. In his memoirs, Babur describes Samarkand's political history, geography, literature, vegetation and some other particularities in fine detail. Therefore, it can be argued that Babur Shah could be a good urban historian and that Baburnama could also be a good urban historiography book.
