The Yoruk and Turkmen tribes of the nomadic Oghuz interacted with other civilations that they faced and at the same time they preserved their own characteristic features. Thus, they have become a society that constantly develops and renews itself. They have chosen Anatolian lands which hosted many civilizations as their homeland.
The art of weaving, which has a special importance for the Turks has developed by combining with the rich culture of Anatolia. Our weaving art is among the best examples of intercultural interaction. It is possible to see the subtleties, richness and artistic understanding of the Turkish cultural structure in our weavings. In this context, weavings are works of art that reveal the deep-rooted history of the Turks.
Weaving, which is among the basic needs of people such as dressing,covering and protection, developed and became widespread in Anatolia with the Turks. Weaving is done in almost every region of Anatolia, and almost every region has gained a reputation for weaving. Weavings vary according to the cultural characteristics and climatic conditions of the region. In this context, our weavings are among our cultural assets that pointing the geographical indications of the region.
It is possible to see weavings with the culture and artistic understanding of the region in our Eastern Black Sea region. Weavings with shuttles were popular in the Eastern Black Sea. Trabzon city is among our weaving centers that contribute to our weaving culture. Trabzon Keşan cloth, which is among the shuttle weavings, has been our study subject. Ikat is one of the ornamental elements of the fabric. The biggest feature that distinguishes the Keşan cloth from other cloths is that the cloth is decorated using the ikat technique. Due to the fact that the Trabzon region is on important trade centers, a lot of intercultural interaction has occurred in that area. Therefore, it is thought that the ikat technique came from the Indonesian island group to Trabzon and spread to the world.
In the introduction part of this study, brief information about the historical development process of weaving, its definition, the history of Trabzon and Keşan cloth is given. The subject consists of three main parts and the conclusion part. In the first part, Trabzon Keşan cloth weaving features, in the second part, the materials used in the cloth and weaving stages, in the third part, the color phenomena that make up the cloth, and in the last part, the ornamental elements of the cloth are tried to be explained in detail.
